10 Steps to Creating Career Opportunities

photo shows ladder reaching up to the sky - the career ladder

Clarity

It's too easy to start looking in the job section of the paper and applying for everything that has an attractive salary, car or any other perks, before falling into this trap, be really clear about what you want from employment. Don't accept employment just because it's the first position that you have been offered; the likelihood is that your only leave several months later. If you make right choice the first time, your likely to stay committed focused and motivated throughout your coming years.

Write a list about the specifics of what it "must" offer, and stick to it. If you're really focused put this list on your covering letter.

I.e. I am looking for an employer who can offer: ………….

"Time is our most valuable asset, yet we tend to waste it, kill it, and spend it rather than invest it." Jim Rohn

Presentation

My father said, dress every day like your going for an interview. This wise old saying goes along way, especially with first impressions.

In my success seminars we talk about “The Chameleon Effect”. Dress and act like you belong in that environment; if you're going for an office job, dress accordingly, don't turn up wearing trainers. Mix in the type of places that you're likely to find employment. Staying at home all day isn't going to work!!

Paint the perfect picture. In written contact with employers ensure everything is literate and presentable. Although the content of the CV is important, the presentation is 100% more likely to catch the eye.

At the interview, make sure that you have everything that an employer may ask for, a copy of a CV, certifications; references contact details and examples of previous work. This is a clear demonstration that you are prepared and confident of your own abilities.

"Do a little more each day than you think you can." Lowell Thomas

Communication

Master all communication both external and internal. 55% of the way we communicate is through physiology, 38% through tone, tempo, pitch and volume, only 7% is the spoken word…

With this in mind, keep mentally and physically fit through your search. Turn up your enthusiasm and enjoy the search. You're likely to feel better be regarded as a positive, motivated candidate.

Change your way of thinking about the negative, if you are faced with rejection don't allow this to unmotivated you. Rejection isn't negative, its feedback.

"Our very business in life is not to get ahead of others... but to get ahead of ourselves." Thomas L. Monson

Know your Topic:

Once you have your foot in the door, shine! Research the company as if you were going to buy it, become an expert. Remember people like people like themselves. If in the interview you can recite everything about them, you're guaranteed to blow their minds.

Just imagine how impressed they would be?

You can fall on the first and second step, but you're walking by the third! - Benjamin Bonetti

Build Rapport

If you have done the above then, the interview should just be protocol, building rapport with the interviewer is crucial; this is where most jobs are won or lost.

Make yourself interesting, don't just talk about work. Find something in common with them and talk about that. Ask questions!

Remember people like people like themselves. Mirror what they do and be part of the environment.

"Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory. "
— Mohandas Gandhi
